The Martyr Saint Sebastian is celebrated in a seven day festival in Chiapas Mexico just south of Oaxaca in the month of January. According to legend the arrows did not kill him and he was rescued and healed by Saint Irene of Rome. The pedestal and tree form the base of this multi-piece carving by Augustin Cruz. Effigy's of Saints by this artist are incredibly scarce to come by these days as he has moved onto giant scale works. This is an original style painted piece by Augustine we were lucky to procure years ago and is pristinely preserved. Each of the 3 arrows remove from the body for easy shipping.
